The capacity of a tanker semi-trailer is influenced by more than just the size of the tank; it also involves road regulations, materials, mechanics, and the physical properties of the liquid. As precision-manufactured vehicles, the capacity of tanker trailers is directly related to transportation safety. Below is an analysis of key considerations for designing the capacity of tanker trailers:
The most common tank trailer capacity produced by INTAI Trailer usually ranges from 30,000L to 60,000L. Of course, for specific regions, our maximum design capacity is 80,000L.
一、Tanker Trailer Capacity Affected by Factors
Road Regulations and Weight Limits:
- Weight restrictions are the primary factor affecting the design capacity of tank trailers. Different countries have different weight restrictions (most commonly 40 tons or 50 tons). Some countries’ road regulations also specify load limits for each axle. This can usually be addressed by increasing the number of axles to increase the tank design capacity. INTAI designs tank trailers with a maximum of 5 axles. Some customers request an additional axle for larger capacities, and this additional axle is usually in a lifted position and does not participate in movement.
- Calculation Formulas:
- Effective Load = Legal Gross Weight – Tractor Weight – Tank Trailer Weight
- Capacity = Effective Load / Liquid Density
Tank Trailer material:
- Different types of steel have different weights. Generally, aluminum alloys are lighter than carbon steel and stainless steel, so aluminum alloy tanker trailers are widely popular in areas with weight restrictions.(Under the condition of limited weight, a lighter weight allows for a larger design capacity)
- The strength of the sheet metal varies depending on the material of the tank body. Although aluminum is lightweight, its strength is lower than that of carbon steel and stainless steel. For large-capacity oil tank trailers, we recommend using carbon steel, which offers higher strength and better stability.
Physical properties of transporting liquids:
- The densities of different types of liquids vary as well. For instance, the density of crude oil is much higher than that of gasoline. Under weight restrictions, the designed capacity of tanker trucks for transporting crude oil will be smaller.
The cross-sectional shape of the tank body:
Different cross-sectional shapes of tanks result in different center of gravity heights. For large-capacity oil tank trailers, we usually recommend customers use elliptical or rectangular shapes, as these two have a lower center of gravity and offer better safety.
- Elliptical shape: With a low center of gravity and good driving stability, it is currently the mainstream choice for transporting refined oil products.
- Square-round (Max-D / Modified Silhouette): This shape provides the largest internal volume within the same height and width constraints.
- Circular: It has the highest structural strength and good pressure resistance, and is usually used for pressure vessels or heavy oil transportation that requires heating, but its space utilization is relatively low.
二、How Much Fuel does a Fuel Trailer Hold?
Calculation Formulas: Capacity = Effective Load / Liquid Density
To determine the volume of liquid transported by a tanker trailer, first subtract the weight of the tractor unit from the total mass of the tanker trailer to calculate the effective payload. Then, divide this effective payload by the fuel density to obtain the liquid volume. The amount of liquid transported by a tanker trailer is usually determined by a variety of factors, such as weight limits, road regulations, and tank design. Trailer Fuel Tank Capacity in Litres
In the 2026 fuel transportation market, the capacity design of tank trailers is not arbitrary, but rather a design philosophy that maximizes transportation efficiency while complying with laws and regulations.
The most common rated capacity range for tank trailers is between 20,000 liters and 60,000 liters. INTAI has many years of experience exporting tank trailers; the following are tank trailer capacities for different regions:
| Area | Mainstream Capacity | Recommended Materials |
| Southern Africa | 40,000 – 45,000L | Aluminum alloy |
| West africa | 45,000 – 50,000L | Carbon steel |
| Southeast Asia | 38,000 – 42,000L | Aluminum alloy |
| Central Asia | 30,000 – 40,000L | Carbon steel |
| Latin America | 8,000 – 10,000 Gallons | Aluminum alloy |
