How Many Tons can a Semi Dump Trailer Haul?

The load capacity of a semi dump trailer is not a fixed number; it depends on factors such as the number of axles, the box capacity, and the chassis configuration. This article will introduce the load capacities of different configurations of dump semi trailers. (Parameter data is for reference only.)

一、Factors Affecting Load Capacity:

1. Conventional Load Capacity Classified by the Number of Axles

In most international markets (such as China’s GB1589 standard or Africa’s SADC standard), the gross vehicle weight (vehicle + cargo) is usually limited by the number of axles. Some countries, such as those in Central Asia and Russia, also have requirements regarding the load capacity per axle. To increase the load capacity, the number of axles must be increased. Therefore, there are policy differences between regions.

Below is a summary of the load capacities for semi tipper trailers with the most common axle numbers:

Trailer configuration Total weight Tare Weight Payload
2 Axle Dump Trailer 30 – 40T 7 – 8T 20 – 30T
3 Axle Dump Trailer 40 – 60T 8 – 10T 30 – 50T
4 Axle Dump Trailer 60 – 80T 10 – 14T 50 – 70T
Additional Notes: Without weight restrictions, the physical load capacity of the reinforced 3-axle dump truck (heavy-duty axle/thickened steel plate) can reach 60t-80T. Contact us for design solutions.

2. The Impact of Semi Dump Trailer Materials on Load Capacity

Material is a key factor affecting load-bearing capacity. Under the same total mass limit, the lighter the vehicle, the more cargo it can carry. Carbon steel rear dump trailers are generally recommended for transporting ores, rocks, and building materials, as they are heavier but offer better pressure resistance and durability. For transporting bulk cargo such as sand and grain, aluminum alloy tipper trailers are recommended if the budget allows, as they are lighter and can carry approximately 3 tons more cargo per trip under weight limits compared to carbon steel end dump trailers.

3. Impact of Cargo Type on the Load Capacity of  End Tipper Trailer

Before understanding the load capacity of a dump trailer, we need to clarify the type of goods we are transporting, such as sand, coal, ore, and rock.

Their densities differ, and the formula is: Weight (tons) = Density (t/m³) x Volume (m³).

For example: Sand density: 1.6 t/m³; Coal density: 0.8 t/m³; Ore density: 2.5 t/m³.

4. Running gear and chassis configuration

The chassis and running gear, being the most stress-bearing parts of a dump trailer, have their physical compressive strength limit as the most fundamental factor in determining its absolute load capacity.

Axle Class: Heavy-duty axles in 13t, 16t, and even 20t classes are available. Of course, different load capacities correspond to different axle models.

Suspension System: Like the axles, the suspension system is selected based on the load capacity. For harsh road conditions in mining areas, heavy-duty suspensions can be selected to adapt to complex transportation environments.

Main Beam Design: As the most critical stress-bearing component of a dump trailer, the main beam’s parameters differ depending on the load capacity. The main differences lie in the thickness of the upper and lower plates and the height of the web plates. For dump semi-trailers transporting over 70 tons, a double-web main beam design or a specially shaped main beam or reinforced sub-beam design can be selected to effectively prevent chassis twisting during heavy unloading.

二、How to Maximize the Tonnage of Tipper Trailer Transportation?

To maximize the transportation capacity of dump semi-trailers, the core logic formula is: Payload (Net Load) = Legal Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) – Vehicle Tare Weight.

The simplest and most direct approach is to reduce the weight of the semi-trailer itself without sacrificing its strength.

1.The parts that bear little force, such as toolboxes and ladders, are replaced with aluminum materials, or the walls of the dump trailer are directly made of aluminum. This significantly reduces the vehicle’s weight.

2.Select high-strength steel materials such as Hardox 500 Tuf or T700, etc., to reduce the weight.

3.Frameless design: The heavy-duty chassis beam running the length of the vehicle is eliminated, and the load is supported by the structural rigidity of the cargo box itself. However, we do not recommend this design for high-load applications.

4. Axle load compliance optimization: For countries with restrictions on single axle load, the load capacity can be increased by reasonably increasing the number of axles, or by using B-Train or superlink tipper trailer design solutions.
